Philosophy
Wildfire resilience is an ongoing process that involves all stakeholders in the community.
We worked with a range of wildfire mitigation experts from fire chiefs to researchers to develop a platform of tools to help automate and scale wildfire prevention programs and drive resident action.
Our software manages actual vegetation and structural information at the individual parcel level. This can be used as ground truth data for grants, compliance and issue resolution tracking. Ultimately informing resource allocation decisions and advanced modelling of future events,
Our products
We support Fire Agencies, Fire Safe Councils, Homeowners Associations and residents with software for defensible space evaluations, fuel removal and resilience grant management
Defensible Space Inspection software
78% of residents who engaged with a Fire Aside Defensible Space report took at least 1 action from their report
DSI software helps Fire Agencies improve the efficiency, velocity and consistency of home evaluations. Residents receive an easy to use interactive report that is customized to their property. Actions in the report are prioritized by risk, with property specific detail which helps to drive resident engagement while also providing consistent ground truth data at the parcel level.
“Fire Aside’s capability to visualize Defensible Space & Home Hardening data at a granular level is already having a major impact on policy. We can now focus on the most impactful projects and measure improvements to residents' safety.”
ChipperDay software helps Fire Agencies expand their chipping programs, with optimized route management and scheduling. Our software makes it easy for residents to schedule a curb-side pick up. They can get text alerts, pin their pile locations and even send photos of their piles to local crews. Think of it like ride-share for chipping.
“We’ve been able to double our participation and pickup rate with the same budget by using ChipperDay to run all our community pickup and drop off programs”
- Eugenia Rendler , Executive Director Santa Clara Fire Safe Council
The Grants module enables policy makers to implement and manage grant and direct assistance programs for communities. The resident experience was intentionally designed to integrate with their customized digital defensible space inspection report so that residents can easily find all potential financial resources available to their unique property as they invest in adapting to wildfire.
"As a non-profit organization our job is to understand the needs of the community and offer resources accordingly. Software like Fire Aside not only provides a service to the county but identifies other needs [including supporting the Senior/Disabled Defensible Space Assistance Program which assists Plumas County residents who might not have the physical or financial resources to create defensible space]"
“By using Fire Aside DSI software, we can visit more homes, offer more thorough action items to residents and therefore dramatically increase the number of fire resistant homes in the community”
- Ryan Sommers North Lake Tahoe Fire Chief
“As a community we are all adapting to wildfire. Truckee Fire teamed up with Fire Aside to use leading edge defensible space inspection software to clearly communicate fuels that need to removed around homes, and what steps can be taken to harden homes to embers. This puts best-practice wildfire information, tailored to a specific home, in the hands of our residents so that they can work through a mitigation checklist to prepare and protect. “
- Eric Horntvedt, Wildfire Prevention Manager Truckee Fire Protection District
“The Marin Wildfire Prevention Authority, was able to build and deploy one of the most active and robust wildfire hazard inspection programs in the United States thanks to Fire Aside’s unique software. Our inspectors are now evaluating more than 30,000 properties annually and documenting measurable improvements in community wildfire resilience. The software is allowing our program to collect and analyze incredibly rich and detailed data about wildfire hazard in our communities. With the help of their team and leading wildfire experts, we are able to analyze that data and better predict the impacts of investment in wildfire resilience. By targeting funding where it’s needed most and will make the greatest impact, we’re delivering better results at a lower cost for taxpayers.”
- Todd Lando, Battalion Chief, Central Marin Fire Department
"We have been working with Fire Aside since June 2020 when the Santa Clara County FireSafe Council was looking to automate our county-wide, wildland urban interface (WUI) chipping program and reduce costs. Fire Aside's ChipperDay and Defensible Space Inspection software helped us transform our wildfire risk reduction program. The software is easy to use, customizable and fast to implement."
- Seth Schalet, Santa Clara County Fire Safe Council

“I used to go out and do 100 inspections but then get 99 calls from people asking questions like ‘which Juniper, tree or structure do I remove.’ The investment in Fire Aside’s software has eliminated almost all of those follow up requests, freeing up our time to do more inspections and improve overall resident engagement.“
